Course Description: Medicine at University of Oxford in Oxford, UK

The Oxford Medicine for ages 16-18 provides you prior knowledge and understanding of medicine, exposing you to the fields of biology, human anatomy, genetics, genomics, emergency medicine and neuroscience in a hands-on learning environment.  

Classes and workshops led by expert tutors and medical professionals will expand your knowledge base and provide real insight into what it takes to build a career in medicine, from applications through to specialisations.

Students on campus at our Oxford Summer School will take their Medicine lessons in historic colleges of the prestigious University of Oxford, explore the historic city with new friends from around the globe, before sleeping in a real student room as part of the true student experience.

Students on our Medicine School Programme will enhance their academic skills and strengthen their ability in school by:

  • Learning the anatomy and physiology of key body systems, and how these are disrupted by disease

  • Applying ethical principles to practical scenarios

  • Developing presentation and communication skills through simulated checkups and appointments

  • Critically analysing current research on medicine

  • Communication and leadership skills developed through presentations and simulations

  • Identify the major health challenges facing humanity

  • Understand how to plan a pathway to medical school

  • Develop the mindset and skills needed in a medical career

  • Explore the different fields and specialisations within Medicine

  • Gain hands-on clinical experience

Location:

With over 20 years of experience, Oxford Royale is an institution that offers educational experiences to bring students to the prestigious environment of the University of Oxford (Queen's College).

All our programmes take place in a secure environment. Our students are supervised 24 hours a day by campus staff. All students must check-in regularly during the day: at breakfast roll-call; at their morning classes; in the afternoon for lessons, workshops or activities; at dinner and in the evening before curfew. All campuses have a curfew.

Each campus office has its own safe where students may deposit items of value such as passports, travel documents, bank cards etc.

All campuses have residential staff who can be contacted 24 hours a day.

A typical weekday

Our Medicine Summer Course in Oxford for ages 16-18 looks like this:

  • 8AM: Students wake up for breakfast on campus before heading to lessons

  • 9AM: Morning lessons, with two short breaks

  • 1PM: Lunch break for students to buy food in London and some free time to relax

  • 2PM: Afternoon lessons

  • 3:30PM: Medicine academic workshop to develop key skills, sporting activities such as run club, and student teatime talks

  • 6PM: Dinner on campus

  • 7PM: Study support sessions

  • 8PM: Public Speaking and Debate Society

  • 9PM: Social activities such as quiz nights, talent shows or arts and crafts

  • 10:30PM: Curfew

Sample Tutors

Dr Claire Keene:

  • She's a public health clinician.

  • With a masters in International Health and Tropical Medicine from the University of Oxford.

  • She is an experienced clinical trial manager, recently managing a Médecins Sans Frontières project on HIV and tuberculosis.

Guest Speakers from Previous Summers:

  • Professor Brian Cox - Physicist, Bestselling Author: A fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Particle Physics at The University of Manchester. He also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, and is an incredibly popular TV and radio presenter on shows such as BBC2’s Solar System.

  • Marcus Du Sautoy - Mathematician, Scientist: One of the UK’s leading scientists and the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford. He has written many books on mathematics, AI and science. His fascinating speaking topics include The Secret of the Winning Streak: The Story of Maths and Why Beckham Chose the 23 Shirt.

  • Helen Sharman - Astronaut, Scientist: Pioneer, role model, science communicator and world-class inspirational speaker, Helen became the first British Astronaut in May 1991, aged 27, when she spent 8 days orbiting the Earth. Chosen out of 13,000 people, Helen underwent rigorous training and preparation for her orbit, and now inspires others with her story.

Transportation:

  • Transfer Fee: Available from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) at £215 one-way.

Their arrival flight must:

  • Land after 0600 BST on one of the above dates

  • Land before 1800 BST on one of the above dates

Their departure flight must:

  • Take off no earlier than 0800 BST

  • Take off no later than 2200 BST

Price includes transport to campus, welcome on arrival, transport booked for you by our head office team, dedicated transfers line to call if any queries, information emails in advance, monitoring of flight delays/diversions and auto-adjustment of transport, supervision at the airport, unaccompanied minor paperwork (if needed), connection with your transport, water and snack on arrival, and more.

 

 

 

As the programmes end, students are invited to attend an illustrious graduation ceremony to honour their achievements, in which they will receive their certificates in an amazing venue on campus. This is followed by a final graduation party on campus for students to celebrate!
